Healing Skylark New Zealand Built Road Bike - Rebuild

A vid of me bringing a Healing Skylark XII back into service and on the road whilst keeping a bit of smoothed out patina throughout to show its years of service. The Skylark was built in New Zealand by Healing in the mid 1980’s. One of two main cycle companies in the country at the time (the other being Morrison Industries). Rebuild of a 1970/80's New Zealand Built Healing Cruiser. Imports into New Zealand for the bicycle market were under strict restrictions prior to the late 1980's and as a result we had a booming internal bicycle manufacturing market where the majority of the machine had to be made/assembled locally using locally produced steel. Healing Loline Oily Rag Rebuild

I picked up an old New Zealand built Healing Loline. We don't see them around too often anymore, so it was worth getting rolling again. Built in the 1970's, it was Healings answer to the Raleigh 20. Less successful, it was eventually dropped for the Healing Cruiser - a more Raleigh 20 lookalike. Packed with a three speed hub and a built in rack, this ratty Loline is a great runabout. Quiet Practice Ukulele Build

An old banged up bit of wood that started life as a tree, turned into a chair and then slowly broke into pieces as I used it for years in my workshop assisting with builds. It's got some sentimental value so I decided to build it into a practice soprano uke. Thanks to Benjamin Tissot - Bensound.com for the music.

      Sorry, i dont have any measurements for this one - being non fretted you really can choose any scale length you like. Perhaps eye it similar to a guitar. That said, are some nice lapsteel plans out there that ideas could be taken from. This could help: www.cigarboxguitar.com/make-a-2x4-lap-steel-guitar-easy-project/

    I've been thinking of making a hollow-body 'Breadwinner' using these techniques - so that was quite interesting. However - that saddle belongs on something with a radiused fretboard - and you put it in reversed; the compensation is absolutely wrong!

    • @MikeHawkey
      @MikeHawkey 11 днів тому

      Thanks for the comments. Dont recall now if the board was radiused or not (50/50 with builds in that regard)- im sure I showed in the video which way I went on this…, but replacement saddle and easy sort - i would have thrown on what i had in parts bin - good spot re which way. My preference is simpler traditional non compensated ones usually vs these small compensation ones.

    Actually, this is exactly how the epiphone violin bass is built, using built up layers of plywood for the frame and results in an incredibly strong and stable structure. It's not about tone because that's fron the pickups. Well done mate!

    A co called Risa makes a line of them with nylon strings and a high quality piezo pick up. Made in Germany I believe, very well built (not cheap) and sound amazing amped and with effects. I have one and love it but difficult to tune and you definitely have to adjust to no headstock. But it’s the best set up instrument I own.

      Thanks & nice one on the builds. Its all experimental aye! - sound hole could make it project a little more, but is more than loud enough for around the family haha. Also, potentially a little more tinny/distorted without a hole. I have put holes in some of my rectangle tin builds.

      @MikeHawkey 5 місяців тому

      Thanks for the nice words. Template wise, for both X style or my own shape creations I tend to make a template from illustrator or inkscape. When making a style version it means some alterations to the shape for smaller versions like Ukes to fit size needed for necks. Templates in paper then glued to mdf if needed for routing - or onto the wood for bodies if a one off. Thickness is a mix of comfort, look and application (eg if need depth for a pickup). Necks generally 18-20mm stock not including fretboard, then shaved down to profile that feels good.
